Albuquerque, N.M. – Monica Vaughn finished the second lowest round of her career once again with a 66-stroke round two en route to a second place finish by the Sun Devils at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational.
"I am very proud of the fight in this team and our second place finish in a strong field to start our year," said head coach Missy Farr-Kaye. "We played the last three holes two under par to solidify our second place. I am so happy to see Monica start her senior season so well and also Sophia had her best finish. I look forward to what this team can accomplish together."
Vaughn's round two was the third lowest among all individuals in the tournament, birdieing seven of 18 holes.
Sophia Zeeb finished just outside the top 10 (T11th), tying her career low rounds in both round two and three (70).
As a team, ASU had the second lowest overall round score in round two (281) and finished 11 under par overall for the tournament.
In a fight to the finish that came down to the final holes, Arizona State finished just ahead of Baylor and a Northwestern team that was ranked preseason No. 8 by Golfweek.
Oklahoma State, Golfweek's preseason No. 9 team, was able to hold onto the lead on day two, finishing 20 under par, nine strokes lower (844) than the Sun Devils (853).
The Sun Devils have just over two weeks of preparation before their next competition, at the Annika Intercollegiate in Orlando, Fla. (Sept. 25-27).
Expected to join the lineup for that competition, Linnea Strom and Olivia Mehaffey will compete at the International Golf Association's World Amateur Team Championships in Riviera Maya, Mexico later this week (Sept. 14-17).
