LAWRENCE, Kansas -- After the NCAA West Regional meet came to an end on Saturday, the Arizona State track and field program found nearly half of their athletes that competed had qualified for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. in two weeks.
Following the three that qualified on Friday, another eight punched their tickets on Saturday for the Sun Devils to total 11 that will represent ASU at the biggest meet of the outdoor season from June 8-11.
Redshirt sophomore Maggie Ewen -- who already qualified in the women's hammer throw on Friday -- had two events to attempt to qualify in on Saturday in the women's shot put and discus throw. Her discus heat was delayed from Friday night until Saturday morning, and that extra time to think didn't seem to phase her. She made it 2-for-2 in her events with a ninth-place finish to qualify for Eugene. It becomes the second-straight season Ewen has qualified in the shot put and discus, but first in the hammer throw.
Not long after her delayed discus event concluded, she began the shot put and threw a new personal best on her first attempt with a toss of 16.82m (55-2.25). That held up for eighth place, qualifying her for all three of her events -- a rare feat for an athlete.
Also in the shot put, senior Ahmed Hassan heaved a new personal best on his third and final throw at 18.60m (61-0.25) for 12th place, qualifying with the final spot in the competition.
Elsewhere in the field events, redshirt junior Tim White had a coming out party in just his third triple jump competition of the outdoor season with a new personal best of 16.43m (53-11.00). It held up for the best mark of the west regional. His partner in crime, senior Josh Dixon, also qualified for the NCAA Championships in 11th with a leap of 15.90m (52-2.00). It makes it the second year in a row Dixon has qualified in the triple jump.
In the women's triple jump, junior Keyasia Tibbs also qualified for her first NCAA Championship in the event with a mark of 12.84m (42-1.25). While the mark was tied for 12th, her second jump ended up being the tiebreaker and was .25 inches further than the other athlete.
While graduate transfer Reggie Lewis just missed qualifying in the 100-meter dash on Friday by a millisecond, he came back on Saturday with a vengeance and qualified in the men's 200-meter dash with a new personal best time of 20.60 and a sixth-place finish.
Earlier in the morning, Lewis took the track with Isaiah Underwood, Brandon Hasson and Ben Trotter for the men's 4x100 relay -- who were all coming off a Pac-12 Championship as well. Once again, Trotter filled in phenomenally for the men on the first leg and ran a seasonal best at 39.32 for the second-best time in the event to qualify as a team for the championships.
Lewis, Hasson, Underwood, Trotter, Ewen, Dixon, White, Tibbs and Hassan join freshman Hudson Keffer and redshirt junior CJ Albertson as the 11 athletes who will represent the Sun Devils in 10 events in Eugene from June 8-11.
