TEMPE -- After a successful month to start the outdoor season, the Arizona State track and field program gets into the final stretch of their outdoor season leading up to Pac-12 Championships.
Several field event athletes, a heptathlete and three distance runners travel back to California for the Triton Invitational and the Chula Vista Olympic Invitational.
Redshirt sophomore Maggie Ewen, senior Ginger Jarchow and redshirt junior Kyle Long will throw the discus in the Olympic Invite starting on Thursday, April 21 in Chula Vista, Calif.
Ewen currently holds the fifth-best throw in the NCAA right now with a toss of 59.01 meters (193-7), which she accomplished at the Sun Angel Classic two weeks ago in Tempe. Jarchow also sits in the top 30 at No. 26 with a throw of 53.28 meters (174-10) at the same meet.
On the men's national list, Long currently holds the 22nd best throw in the country with the mark of 57.32 meters (188-1) which he tallied at the Sun Angel meet as well.
At the Triton Invitational, 11 Sun Devil men -- including Long who will compete in both meets -- and nine women -- including Ewen and Jarchow -- will be competing across nine events.
After competing in the discus events on Thursday, Ewen and Jarchow will turn around and compete at the Triton Invite in the discus and hammer throw on Friday. For the discus, Ewen is entered into the invitational heat while Jarchow is in the open.
Long is also entered into the men's discus and hammer throw on Saturday at Triton.
After moving into ASU's top 10 all-time list in the shot put, redshirt junior Tom Anderson will compete again looking to improve on his personal best last week at the Bryan Clay Invitational. His mark of 18.90 meters (62-0.25) ranks 10th all-time in school history.
Sophomore Kendra Purifoye continues to train and develop in the multi events, as she will be competing in the 100-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash, high jump and long jump. She set a personal best in the heptathlon earlier this year at the Jim Click Shootout with a 4774.
Pole vaulters Haleigh Fritts, Kristiana Warth, Athena Masolini and Vanessa Davis will also compete on Friday along with the men -- Nathan Hiett, Matt Eckles and Dillon Groener. Hiett is coming off back-to-back victories with a win in the Sun Angel Classic open event and at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
Also in the field, freshman Mason Ford is coming off a new outdoor personal best in the high jump with a mark of 2.05 meters (6-8.75).
On the track, redshirt sophomore Bernie Montoya will run in his first 800-meter event since the 2014 Baldy Castillo Invitational over two years ago. At the Bryan Clay Invite, Montoya placed 25th out of over 100 runners with a new personal best in the 1,500-meter race -- an event he also hadn't ran in since 2014.
