TEMPE, Ariz.—Arizona State track and field’s junior Keyasia Tibbs broke the 16-year-old school record in the triple jump with a best mark of 12.96m (42-06.25) on Saturday at the 37th Sun Angel Track Classic at Sun Angel Stadium.

The previous best, set by Valerie Williams, was 12.84m (41-01.50), in 2000.

“I think one of the things that is really important to us, as the state university of Arizona, is to really showcase our sport,” Director of Track and Field Greg Kraft said. “It’s always exciting to have the high school student athletes here with the professional athletes, but I think the star of the meet is probably the little boy in the Bantam 100m who couldn’t be more than three feet tall. It’s really important for us to be part of the community and to be able to showcase track and field at all ages and that is really what makes our sport so special. For me, that is really the primary focus for us when we host this event.”

Including Tibbs’ runner-up finish in the triple jump, multiple Sun Devils found success competing in the premiere events, especially in the field.

In the premiere women’s discus, Maggie Ewen finished second with a throw of 59.01m (193,07), while Ginger Jarchow followed with a sixth-place finish at 53.28m (174.10). On the men’s side of the premiere discus, Kyle Long finished second with a best toss of 57.32m (188-01).

Additionally, Ewen took third in the premiere shot put with a throw of 16.44m (53-11.25), while Thomas Anderson took third for the men with a throw of 18.74m (61-05.75), and Kyle Long followed in eighth at 16.92m (55-06.25).

In the open men’s discus, Quaid Vuncannan led the way, finishing second at 52.25m (171-05), and Anderson finished ninth at 49.22m (161-06).
