PHOENIX – Sun Devil Baseball rallied from a four-run deficit to take a one-run lead with five outs to play, but Utah scored 10 runs in the final two frames as Arizona State lost to the Utes, 16-7, on Sunday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
ASU’s two-run lead in the opening inning turned into a four-run deficit midway through the fifth, but the Sun Devils (14-9, 1-5) scored three times in the bottom-half of the frame and once in the sixth to knot the game, 6-6.
The Devils completed the five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning as third baseman David Greer followed a five-pitch walk by second baseman Andrew Snow with a RBI double to right field that plated the go-ahead run, 7-6.
After the Utes (8-13, 4-2) countered with four runs in the top of the following inning to move back ahead, 10-7, ASU brought the tying run to the plate in the ensuing frame behind consecutive walks, but a double-play groundout and a strikeout ended the rally. The Utes added six runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
Greer (1-1), who began Saturday’s game at first base, moved to third in the sixth inning and took over at pitcher with one out in the eighth, fell a home run short of the cycle and added two RBI and a run scored, but took the loss after allowed three runs, including two earned, on two hits and a walk in the frame.
Shortstop Colby Woodmanses drove in a pair of runs with two singles and Snow added a two-run base hit and scored twice as the Devils notched double-digit hits for the second consecutive game and 12th time this season.
ASU used 10 pitchers, including right-hander Eder Erives, the only pitcher to record more an inning on the day. He allowed three runs on four hits and two walks in three innings of work.
Starting right-hander Hever Bueno, in his first appearance since the season opener on Feb. 19, struck out three in the first inning but was replaced after a leadoff walk in the second. He faced six batters and threw a total of 27 pitches, including 15 strikes, and was responsible for one run on one hit and two walks.
The Devils opened the first inning with two runs on a walk and a pair of hits, including a RBI triple from Greer and a run-scoring single from Woodmansee, to jump ahead, 2-0
Right-hander James Ryan replaced Bueno with a runner on first and no outs in the top of the second, and Utah responded with three singles and a double-steal to put up a three-spot in the frame and take a one-run lead.
A close call at first base with two outs evolved into three runs for the Utes in the top of the fifth. Erives began the fifth with a flyout and a groundout, and induced a short chopper back to the mound in the third at-bat of the inning, but the runner was ruled safe. Utah capitalized and extend its advantage to four via two singles, a ground-rule double and an intentional walk.
Snow drove a bases-loaded single through the left side and Woodmansee dropped a base hit into shallow center field to bring home three runs in the fifth and pull the Devils back within one, 6-5. Tyler and Daniel Williams each walked to begin the inning and RJ Ybarra singled to load the bases for Snow, who came through a two-run base hit. Woodmansee plated Ybarra two batters later for his second RBI of the game.
Center fielder Andrew Shaps scored the tying run in the sixth inning on a leadoff single and a RBI double to center field from catcher Brian Serven.
Notes: Right fielder Gage Canning recorded his first career outfield assist for the third out in the second inning…Woodmansee has nine multi-hit games and a team-high seven multi-RBI games…Greer started in left field on Thursday night and played four different positions in the series...Woodmansee leads the team with 22 RBI and Greer leads the team with 34 hits.
