CORVALLIS, Ore. – Sun Devil Baseball was unable to recover from an early deficit in a 12-2 loss to No. 3 Oregon State on Saturday at Goss Stadium in Corvallis, Ore.
The Sun Devils (13-5, 0-2) fell into a six-run hole in the opening frame and only two of the Beavers’ (14-2, 2-0) seven runs across the first two innings were earned as three errors contributed to the Devils’ initial woes.
Arizona State scratched two runs across in the ninth inning on a leadoff walk and three singles, including RBI base hits from both designated hitter Sebastian Zawada and catcher Zach Cerbo.
Shortstop Colby Woodmansee added a pair of singles to record his eighth multi-hit game, including his second this series, and has reached base safely in each of the team’s 18 games this season.
The Beavers used three hits, two ASU errors, a pair of walks and a hit batter in the first inning to jump out to a 6-0 lead. A leadoff walk was followed by a single and a double that put OSU on the board, and a hit batter in the next at-bat loaded the bases with no outs. Four more runs, including three unearned, scored on a grounder up the middle that was misplayed by the Devils and a single back to the mound that was followed by an errant throw to home plate.
Starting left-hander Eli Lingos (2-2) was replaced before he recorded an out in the first inning and right-hander Ryan Hingst issued a sacrifice fly, a groundout and a flyout to right field to close out the frame.
Hingst scattered three hits across his four innings of work, his longest outing of the season, and was responsible for two runs, including one earned, with one strikeout. Right-hander Fitz Stadler took the mound in the bottom of the fifth and went a career-long three innings. He gave up a pair of runs on five hits and a walk, and struck out one.
OSU stretched its lead to eight in the fourth on a leadoff walk, stolen base, wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to left field, and added four runs across its final three innings. Right-hander Jake Thompson (2-1) worked seven scoreless innings to earn the win.
Notes: Ybarra pinch hit in the fifth and made his first appearance of the season at first base...freshman right-hander Gio Lopez made his first career regular-season appearance in the eighth inning…Woodmansee has reached base safely in 69 of the team’s past 76 games.
