FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- After day two of the Pac-12 Championships, the Arizona State women sit in sixth place with a score of 212.50 after breaking several personal records in the process.
Junior Katarina Simonovic made a statement with her time of 4:44.04 -- an NCAA 'B' standard qualifying time -- for first place in the women's 500-yard freestyle 'B' event final. It knocked off her previous best of 4:46.20 set at the 2014 Pac-12 Championships.
Her teammate, junior Indira Ceranic, showed how far she's come in the event with a time of 4:51.22, bringing her new personal best down from 5:02.22 set in 2013.
In the women's 200 individual medley, freshman Marlies Ross took first place in the 'C' event final with a time of 1:58.92 -- good for an NCAA 'B' standard time. It wasn't her personal best, but still one of just the few times she has raced short course as of late.
In the 50-yard sprints, senior Marina Spadoni went to work in her last Pac-12 Championship, clocking her best time of her college career with a 22.84. It beat her previous best set at the Art Adamson Invitational of 23.25. The time was also good enough for an NCAA 'B' standard time.
The women's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Alysha Bush, Spadoni, Ingibjorg Jonsdottir and Simonovic placed sixth with a time of 1:31.09.
Off the 3-meter diving board, sophomore Mara Aiacoboae made the finals on Thursday evening and placed fifth out of 33 divers with a score of 317.85.
For the men, Heikki Makikallio placed fourth in the men's 1-meter diving final while David Hoffer came in seventh.
Day three begins on Friday morning at 11 a.m. PT (Noon MT) with the women's 400 individual medley prelims, 100-yard butterfly prelims, 200-freestyle prelims, 100-yard breaststroke prelims and 100-yard backstroke prelims. The men's diving team will also participate in the platform prelims.
The finals for all the prelims as well as the women's 400-yard medley relay will take place at 6 p.m. PT (7 p.m. MT).
