Waikoloa, Hawaii – The Arizona State men’s golf is set to kick-off its 2016 spring season this week Feb. 4-6, at the 25th annual Amer Ari Invitational, in Waikoloa Hawaii.
The program has had recent success at the event, winning the 2015 team title with a 38-under 826 (277-278-271). Past Sun Devil individual medalists at the Amer Ari include, Jesper Kennegard (2009), Chris Hanell (1996), and Todd Demsey (1994). Arizona State also won the team title in 1995.
The tournament which is to be hosted at the par-72, 7,074-yard Waikoloa Kings’ Course, features a stacked 19-team field including: No. 15 Arizona State, No. 1 Auburn, California Davis, Colorado, CSU-Monterey Bay, Georgia Tech, Hawaii-Hilo, Hawaii-Manoa, No. 12 Oklahoma State, No. 32 Oregon, Oregon State, Osaka Gakuin, Pacific, San Jose State, Southern California, No. 5 Stanford, Texas Christian, No. 33 Texas Tech, and No. 29 UCLA (Golfweek).
Headed by seniors Jon Rahm and Max Rottluff, the Sun Devil lineup will be rounded out by Jared du Toit, Alberto Sanchez, and Ki Taek Lee. Sun Devil swingers Nicolo Galletti and Tobias Eden will compete in the event as individuals.
The three-day, 54-hole event opens Thursday. Each round will begin at 7:30 a.m. HAST/10:30 a.m. MST with a shotgun start. Live scoring for the Amer Ari Invitational will be available at golfstat.com.
QUICK RECAP OF THE FALL...
Arizona State rolls into the spring season coming off a strong fall campaign. In four tournament appearances the Sun Devils posted a cumulative 49-5-1 record, finishing third at Olympia Fields to open the season, following with second-place finishes at the Jackrabbit, Alister MacKenzie, and Tavistock respectively.
OLYMPIA FIELDS INVITATIONAL/SEP. 18-20
Sun Devil senior Alberto Sanchez notched a third-place finish helping to lead the Arizona State men’s golf team to a third-place in the Fighting Illini/Olympia Fields Invitational held at Olympia Fields Country Club in Chicago, Illinois. Sanchez closed the tournament with a 1-under 69 to finish at 3-under 207, four behind individual medalist Maverick McNealey of Stanford. Sanchez’s third-place finish marks his best finish as a Sun Devil as well as the senior’s second career top-5 finish.

JACKRABBIT INVITATIONAL/SEP. 26-28
After entering the final round of play at the Jackrabbit/South Dakota State (Sep. 26-28) in sixth-place the Sun Devils managed to finish second in a field of 14 teams carding a seven-under par 281. Collectively the Sun Devils posted a three-day total 1-over 865 (304-280-281). Senior Alberto Sanchez led the way for the Sun Devils closing the tournament with a 4-under 72, finishing at 3-under 218 (76-69-68), four shots off the individual medalist. Jon Rahm closed the event at 2-under par 214 (75-69-70) finishing in 10th place.

Led by a late charge from senior Jon Rahm, the Arizona State men’s golf team closed play at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational (Oct. 12-13) tied for second, carding a cumulative 11-under 273, finishing the tournament at 33-under 819 (277-269-273). Rahm finished tied for second at 16-under. Jared du Toit posted his first top-10 finish as a Sun Devil closing at 10-under, tied for eighth.

Jon Rahm notched his first collegiate victory of the season and his eighth all-time as a Sun Devil, medaling at the Tavistock Invitational in Windermere, Florida. With yet another individual title to his credit, the senior All-American tied Sun Devil Hall of Famer Billy Mayfair’s second-place mark in career-wins at 8. Rahm who spent the tournament jockeying for first with teammate Max Rottluff, carded a final-round, three-under 63, finishing the tournament at six-under 210 (71-70-69). All-American Max Rottluff concluded play with a two-over 74, posting a tournament total 4-under 212 (68-70-74), earning him a second-place finish.
