TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University soccer player Jessica Raybe was named CollegeSoccer360.com’s National Player of the Week, according to an announcement by the website on Wednesday.
Raybe, a sophomore forward, came up with an outstanding performance in the Sun Devil soccer team’s 2-1, double-overtime upset win at No. 18 Washington last Thursday. Coming off a game in which she scored ASU’s goal in its 1-1 tie at UCLA on Oct. 11, Raybe continued to be the team’s offensive sparkplug on Thursday as she scored ASU’s first goal and then was responsible for setting up the game-winning goal in the second overtime.
The Sun Devils came into the game looking for their first road win over Washington since 2005. Raybe would help give the team an early boost when she took a pass from sophomore midfielder Madison Kmetko and guided a cross-like shot into the lower right pocket of the net to give ASU a 1-0 lead a little more than 11 minutes into the game.
The Huskies, who had not lost at home prior to last week, would come back to tie it late in the first half. Neither team would score in the second half and the game would go into overtime. Five minutes into the second overtime, Raybe outraced two Washington defenders in pursuit of a pass from teammate Whitney Kanavel. Raybe caught up to the pass and poked the ball just as Washington’s goalkeeper, Megan Kufeld, was about to grab it. While attempting to catch up to the ball Raybe was fouled by Kufeld, setting up a penalty kick. Kanavel would make the ensuing penalty kick to give ASU the win.
The Sun Devils close out the home portion of their 2015 schedule this weekend when they host Oregon State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Oregon on Sunday at 11 a.m. Sunday’s game will be Senior Day. Prior to the game the team will honor seniors McKeznie Berryhill, Cali Farquharson, Tommi Goodman, Whitney Kanavel, Lucy Lara, Alyssa Martinez, Chandler Morris, Rachel Ometer, Christina Rebata, Mackenzie Sermerad and Sara Tosti.
