STANFORD, Calif. - The Arizona State women's golf team teed off with high expectations against several of the best teams in the country, but would finish round one with a 15-over 299 in a tie for 11th.

Coming off a stellar performance at the Windy City Classic, the No. 11 Sun Devils struggled to find many birdies on the front nine of the par-71, 6,130-yard Stanford Golf Course.

"We struggled finding our rhythm a little bit today," head coach Missy Farr-Kaye said. "Madison hung in there and put together a very good round."

Another good round indeed, as freshman Madison Kerley found a way to remain even-keel throughout the day, birdieing two and bogeying just as many on the front nine. She capitalized on her chances down the stretch, finishing the day with a one-under 70 in a tie for third place.

Sophomore Sophia Zeeb turned in the next best round for ASU, finishing with a three-over 74.

On the positive side, all five Devils improved on their scorecard on the back nine. In each of the past two tournaments, the women demonstrated key adjustments as each day progressed and that helped lead to top finishes in each of them.

"I am confident that this team is resilient and will come back strong tomorrow ready to play some great golf," Farr-Kaye said.

Sophomore Roberta Liti will tee off first for ASU tomorrow, starting off the back nine at 8:30 a.m. PT. The Sun Devils are paired up with Pepperdine and No. 3 University of Arizona.
