NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 18 Arizona State women’s soccer team was not able to generate any offense in a 2-0 loss at Oklahoma on Sunday.
The Sun Devils (4-3) played without leading scorer Cali Farquharson, who was held out for precautionary reasons. Farquharson, who entered the weekend ninth among active NCAA DI leaders in career goals, did not play most of the second half of Friday’s 3-2 loss at Oklahoma State. She scored her fifth goal of the season (39th of her career) against the Cowgirls on Friday in helping the Sun Devils build a 2-1 lead at the half.
Eight Sun Devils combined for 11 shots on Sunday led by Lucy Lara, who had four (two on goal). Also recording shots on goal were McKenzie Berryhill, Tommi Goodman and Jazmarie Mader.
The game was played in less-than-ideal conditions. Rain fell for much of the morning and tapered off during warmups only to resume shortly after the game started. The wet conditions would make it challenging for both teams at times.
The Sooners (5-4) would break the stalemate in the 42nd minute when Shiloh Price crossed the ball to Caren Nelson, who sent a rolling shot to the near side that tucked just inside the post.
Senior goalkeeper Chandler Morris made four saves in the game to help keep the Sun Devils within striking distance. Included in those saves were a diving effort to deny a goal in the first half and another she stretched out for in the second half.
ASU’s hopes of getting back into the game became even more difficult in the second half when a hand ball was called on the Sun Devils while they were defending in the box. Oklahoma's Laura Rayfield was successful on the ensuing penalty kick attempt to increase the Sooners’ lead to 2-0.
In the end the Sun Devils were unable to create any dangerous scoring threats as they were able to place only one of their six second-half shots on frame.
The Sun Devils return to action next Sunday at 11 a.m. PT when they host Washington State in the Pac-12 conference opener. The game will be televised Pac-12 Networks.
