TUCSON, Ariz. – Jazmarie Mader scored a single-game career-high two goals, Chandler Morris recorded her fourth shutout in as many games to tie the school record for career shutouts (23) and Lucy Lara posted three assists as the No. 22 Arizona State women’s soccer team defeated No. 14 Pepperdine 5-0 on Friday.

Cali Farquharson, Aly Moon and Jessica Raybe also scored goals for the Sun Devils (4-0), who have outscored their first four opponents 16-0 and are 4-0 for the first time since 2000.

“I feel like we are really good and we needed a test like this and today we came through with flying colors,” said ASU head coach Kevin Boyd following the game. “Regardless of the score today, Pepperdine is a very good team and we all know that. They are the No. 14 team in the country for a reason.

“I was really happy for Lucy, who had three assists, Chandler who tied the school record for career shutouts today and Jaz, who had two goals. (Jazmarie’s goals) have been coming because over the last week to week and a half of practice she has been driven.”

For ASU, Friday’s win came over a Pepperdine squad that had not given up a goal in four of its first six games. In its most recent contest on Sunday, Pepperdine (4-2-1) tied top-ranked Virginia 2-2. Fast forward to Friday and the Waves were unable to create any serious threats against the Sun Devils’ stingy defense, which allowed only eight shots (two on frame).

The game was a stalemate through much of the first half as neither team could take control. That would change in the 38th minute when Lara found Farquharson breaking free in the middle of the field. Farquharson would take the pass and convert into her fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for ASU.

Less than two minutes later the Devils struck again when Lara found Mader behind the defense. Mader took Lara’s pass, outraced her pursuing defenders and put her shot past the keeper to give ASU a 2-0 advantage at the half.

ASU’s offensive onslaught would continue in the second half when Moon scored her fourth goal of the season in the 54th minute to keep pace with Farquharson for the team lead. The goal was the product of an outstanding individual effort by Moon as she was able to get the ball into scoring position despite having a defender draped over her. After falling, Moon quickly jumped back to her feet, regained possession of the ball, scampered around traffic near the goal and perfectly placed her shot the between the keeper’s legs to give ASU a 3-0 lead.

The Lara-to-Mader connection would set up ASU’s fourth goal of the game. In a sequence similar to the one the duo used to set up a goal in the first half, Lara found Mader with a precise pass that Mader took in stride toward the goal and sent her crossing shot outside of the keeper’s reach to extend ASU’s lead to 4-0.

Jessica Raybe scored her first goal of the season in the 71st minute to make the final score 5-0.

The Devils found the back of the net on five of their 13 shots on Friday, missing only one of their shots that was on frame.

“We played extremely well, especially in the attacking third of the field and finding goals,” said Boyd. “We feel like our attack is really dangerous and that is being proven. I have been telling the team that I want to see consistency, I want us coming out with the same mindset all the time and trying to impose our game on the opponent and today we did that.”

Friday’s game was part of the annual Cats Classic being hosted by the University of Arizona. The Sun Devils will close out action at the Cats Classic on Sunday when they take on No. 18 Texas Tech at 11 a.m. in a game that will be televised by Pac-12 Networks.
