Sun Devil golfers Jon Rahm and Max Rottluff are set to tee it up at this week’s U.S. Amateur Championship (Aug. 17-23) at Olympia Fields Country Club in Chicago, Illinois.
Rahm currently ranked the No. 1 Amateur golfer in the world, had three individual titles during the 2014-15 season including a second-consecutive first-place finish at the ASU-hosted Thunderbird Invitational. The 2015 winner of the Ben Hogan Award given to the top men’s collegiate golfer, looks to capture his second amateur win of the summer season after defending his title in the Spanish Amateur in July.
Sun Devil rising senior Max Rottluff recorded nine top-10 finishes in 2014-15, including first-place finishes at the Alister MacKenzie Invite and the Arizona Intercollegiate. Rottluff along with Rahm earned GCAA first-team All-American nods during the season, the second time a Sun Devil duo has earned the accolade in the same season since Scott Johnson and Chris Harnell accomplished the feat in 1997.
Rahm and Rottluff will have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of three former Sun Devil U.S. Amateur Champions including Jeff Quinney (2000), Phil Mickelson (1990), and Billy Mayfair (1987). Other notable past winners include Bobby Jones (5x Winner), Tiger Woods (3x Winner), and Jack Nicklaus (2x Winner).
For the first time the tournament will be held at Olympia Fields Country Club which has been the host of four major championships, twice serving as a U.S. Open venue. The Championship consists of two days of stroke play, followed by knockout competition held at match play to decide the winner of the leading 64 competitors.
