PHOENIX – Freshman second baseman Andrew Snow drove the game-winning hit into right field in the 11th inning to give No. 12 Sun Devil Baseball a walk-off win, 6-5, in the series finale against Washington State on Saturday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Arizona State won its seventh Pac-12 series of the season and its 10th overall, the most since 2012, behind Snow’s second game-winning hit of the season. Right fielder Trever Allen scored the winning run from second base after he reached on a fielding error by WSU’s second baseman to lead off the frame and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Jordan Aboites.
Snow tied his career-high with three hits, catcher Brian Serven notched two hits and drove in a pair of runs, and Allen added a pair of hits, including his 20th career home run, and two RBI to pace the Sun Devils’ (32-19, 17-10) offense on Senior Night.
Right-hander Ryan Burr (8-2) struck out a career-high seven across five innings, the longest relief outing of his three-year career, to earn the win. He took over in the seventh and conceded the game-tying double, but threw four scoreless innings, including a perfect 11th.
Starting right-hander Seth Martinez retired the first six batters of the game and struck out six in a five-inning no-decision. He allowed three runs on six hits and two walks, and was replaced by right-hander Darin Gillies, who tossed a perfect sixth inning.
A four-run first inning staked the Devils an early 4-0 lead as Martinez struck out the side in the opening frame. Serven began the scoring with a two-run double as he drove in left fielder Jake Peevyhouse and designated hitter David Greer, who reached on a single and a walk, respectively, and Allen capped off the scoring with a two-run homer to left field.
WSU designated hitter Ben Roberts led off the fourth inning with a single and moved to third on a walk and a groundout before he was plated on a single by first baseman Tyler McDowell. ASU countered in the bottom of the frame with three consecutive two-out singles, highlighted by center fielder Johnny Sewald’s team-leading 13th two-out RBI, to keep its advantage to four, 5-1.
The Cougars (28-25, 10-17) scored four unanswered runs to tie the game at five runs apiece, including two in both the fifth and seventh innings. Second baseman Ian Sagdal drove a two-run homer to right field in the top of the fifth to cut the Devils’ lead to a pair, and a two-out, two-run double from Roberts knotted things in the top of the seventh.
ASU had opportunities to break the 5-5 tie in the latter third of the game, but left nine runners on base, including the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th.
WSU right-hander Ian Hamilton (0-4) threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief before he conceded the game-winning hit and unearned run in the 11th. Starting right-hander Ryan Walker gave up four runs on three hits and a walk in the first inning and did not come back out for the second.
