Seattle, Wash. – The No. 24 Arizona State women’s tennis team defeated No. 50 Washington, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon to improve their record to 14-7, 5-4 on the season.
“I thought today was a fantastic effort by our team,” said ASU head coach Sheila McInerney. “With Desirae and Stephanie out with injuries, it was imperative that everyone step up and we did just that.”
With injuries to juniors Desirae Krawczyk and Stephanie Vlad, the Sun Devils were forced to step up defeat a tough No. 50 Washington. With Krawczyk holding a 15-4 at the No. 1 singles spot in ASU’s line-up and Vlad holding a 12-8 at the No. 2 singles spot, the Sun Devils were in need for everyone to step up on the court.
During doubles, No. 52 pair, senior Joanna Smith and sophomore Kassidy Jump played court one, pair of sophomore Alex Osborne and junior Ebony Panoho played on court two and pair of senior Leighann Sahagun and sophomore sophomore Gussie O’Sullivan played on court three.
On court two, Washington pair Lukac and Ysidora defeated Panoho and Osborne, 8-4. On court one, Washington pair, Douglas-Miron and Kobayashi defeated Jump and Smith during a tiebreaker, 8-7 (2), to take the early advantage point on the match.
During singles, Jump stepped in on court one for Krawczyk as she defeated her opponent, 6-3, 6-4. Also stepping up, Jump played on court two for Vlad as she downed her opponent after a tiebreaker, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
“This may have been our best win of the season, considering the circumstances,” said Coach Sheila McInerney. “It was a truly team effort today and this should give us confidence moving forward.”
Next up, the Sun Devils will be in Tempe for their last home match of season as they face Arizona on Friday, Apr. 17 at 12:30 p.m. MST at Whiteman Tennis Center. Be sure to come support the Sun Devils and seniors Joanna Smith and Leighann Sahagun for their last home matches.
