TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 24 Arizona State women’s tennis team lost, 1-6, against Cal this Saturday afternoon at Whiteman Tennis Center. After losses to Stanford and California, Arizona State’s record falls to 12-5 (3-2).
“It is always disappointing to lose but we can take some positives from this match, said ASU head coach Sheila McInerney.“Ebony won again and she is really finding her form and playing well.”
During doubles, California took the early advantage as they won on courts two and three to go up, 1-0, on Arizona State. After Cal pair Poppvic and Chi defeated ASU pair Panoho and Osborne, 8-4, court one was abounded as ASU’s Krawczyk and Vlad was up 7-6.
“I thought Kassidy and Leighann played well despite losing the match breaker,” said Coach Shiela McInerney. “Cal is No. 3 in the country for a reason and I felt we played quite well in the singles overall. But with a team like Cal, who is tough, you have to keep it going for three sets and we didn’t quite do that today.”
During singles, it was a hard earned effort for junior Ebony Panoho to win the lone point for the Sun Devils as she defeated Cecilia Estlander, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9). Two other matches were lost in tiebreaker as Denise Starr defeated sophomore Kassidy Jump, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8).
Up next, the Sun Devils will stay in Tempe to continue conference play as they take on No. 4 UCLA on Friday, Apr. 3 at 1:30 p.m. MST and No. 1 USC on Saturday, Apr. 4 at Noon MST, both at Whiteman Tennis Center.
