TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 19 Arizona State women’s tennis team fell to No. 16 Pepperdine, 3-4, this afternoon at Whiteman Tennis Center.

“It was certainly a tough loss but I thought we competed very well in singles after losing the doubles point,” said ASU head coach Sheila McInerney. “I thought Kassidy, Ebony and Leighann played particularly well.”

During doubles play, partners Desirae Krawczyk and Stephanie Vlad downed their opponents, 6-1. However, it was not enough to earn the point as Pepperdine won two of the three double matches to earn the early point.

After losing the first doubles point of the season, the Sun Devils fell short during singles. Back from injury, senior Leighann Sahagun defeated Pepperdine’s Christine Maddox, 4-6, 6-4, 3-1, after the matches for the day retired. Junior Ebony Panoho also showed a strong outing as she downed her opponent in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.

“We have to quickly put this loss behind us and be ready for a good San Jose State team tomorrow morning,” said head coach Sheila McInerney.

Next up, the Sun Devils will face No. 53 San Jose State on Friday, Mar. 20 at 11 a.m. MT.  Soon after, the Sun Devils will make a quick trip to Pullman, Wash. to take on Washington State on Sunday, Mar. 22 at 11 a.m. PT/Noon MT.

Next weekend, the Sun Devils will be back in Tempe to continue Pac-12 play against No. 10 Stanford on Friday, Mar. 27 at 1:30 p.m. MT and No. 3 California on Saturday, Mar. 28 at Noon MT.
