Las Vegas, Nev.—The No. 6 Arizona State men’s golf team recorded its seventh top-five finish of the season at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters on Wednesday. The Sun Devils smoked the final round with 16 birdies and an eagle, tying for third with a 9-under 855 (286-289-280).
Fourth-ranked Texas captured the team title after shooting an impressive final-round 10-under 278. The Longhorns recorded a 26-under 838 through three rounds and finished 10 strokes ahead of second-place No. 23 Oklahoma. The Sun Devils, who tied for third with No. 22 Oklahoma State, placed ahead of No. 1 Illinois and No. 3 Southern California.
Alabama’s Robby Shelton took home the individual title with a 15-under 201. After sharing the top spot with UNLV’s Redford Bobbitt at the beginning of the round, Shelton surged ahead for the win with a final-round 7-under 65. Shelton carded the most birdies (16) of the tournament, nine of which were in the final round.
Arizona State’s Jon Rahm recorded his second consecutive second-place finish on Wednesday. The junior jumped three spots on the leader board after carding five birdies and an eagle in the final round. Rahm, who led the field in scoring on par-five holes (-10), notched the most eagles (2) and the second-most birdies (15) of the tournament.
Max Rottluff and Nicolo Galletti each shot a 2-under 70 in the final round. Rottluff vaulted 10 spots on the leader board to tie for 18th with a 2-under 214. After struggling in the first round, Galletti rebounded to improve his score in the second and third rounds. The sophomore tied for 64th overall.
Alberto Sanchez also scored under par on Wednesday, carding five birdies on the front nine. The junior moved nine spots on the board, tying for 48th with a 4-over 220.
Up next, the Sun Devils head to Oregon to compete in The Duck Invitational, Mar. 23-24. The tournament will be held at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. Live scoring will be available on golfstat.com.
