TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 24 Arizona State women’s tennis team swept Marquette, 7-0, this afternoon at Whiteman Tennis Center. The Sun Devils improve their record on the season to 8-2.
“I thought we played well today. To Marquette’s credit, they played well in the singles,” said ASU head coach Sheila McInerney. “It was good for us; I thought the singles matches were very competitive. It will be good for us going into Pac-12 play on the road this weekend in Utah and Colorado.”
Once again, junior Desirae Krawczyk dominated the day. The No. 26 Krawczyk, according to this week’s ITA’s women’s national singles rankings, defeated her opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. During doubles, Krawczyk and junior Stephanie Vlad did not finish their match as double pairs senior Joanna Smith and sophomore Kassidy Jump downed their opponents, 6-0. In this week’s ITA’s women’s national doubles rankings, pairings Krawczyk/Vlad and Smith/Jump took No. 26 and No. 75, respectively. The Sun Devils have now earned the point during doubles in all 10 matches this spring.
“It was nice to get three home match wins before going into Pac-12 play. The girls feel good about it. It is good for confidence with good competition coming up," said coach Sheila McInerney. "The conditions in Utah and Colorado are a lot different so it will be good going in with the momentum we have.”
Up next, the Sun Devils will be on the road to start Pac-12 play with two matches against Utah at Salt Lake City, Utah on Friday, Mar. 13 at 12:30 p.m. MST and Colorado at Boulder, Colo. on Sunday, Mar. 15 at 9 a.m. MST.
