TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 32 Arizona State women’s tennis team swept the San Francisco Dons, 7-0, on today’s overcast Saturday morning. The Sun Devils improve their record against the Dons to 5-2.
“I thought the team really came out strong today in singles and kept their level throughout the matches,” said ASU head coach Sheila McInerney. “Because of the threat of the rain we started with singles play and the girls adjusted very well.”
With rain threatening, today’s match started with singles. ASU took down San Francisco in straight sets in each match as Arizona State got off to quick lead after sophomore Gussie O’Sullivan swept her opponent Ines Teixeira, 6-0, 6-0. Junior Desirae Krawczyk, ranked 52nd in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, downed ITA’s ranked 79th Andrea Ka, 6-4, 7-5.
“We all go off to strong starts and didn’t let up, which is always a good thing,” said coach Sheila McInerney. “I was also very happy that we came out and played well and aggressive in the doubles after sweeping all six singles matches.”
After a short rain delay, doubles resumed as ASU swept USF for the final point of the day. Krawczyk and junior Stephanie Vlad continue their success as partners as they defeated USF’s Ka and Marina Nikolic, 6-4.
Sunday’s Mar. 1 match against No. 18 Pepperdine has been rescheduled for Thursday, Mar. 19 at 1:30 p.m., at Whiteman Tennis Center.
Next week, the Sun Devils will stay in Tempe, Ariz. for three days of matches starting with No. 64 St. Mary’s College of California on Saturday, Mar. 7, at Noon MST. Shortly after, the Sun Devils will take on Pennsylvania on Monday, Mar. 9, at 1:30 p.m. MST and Marquette on Tuesday, Mar. 10, at 1:30 p.m. MST
