TUCSON, Ariz. – Cali Farquharson scored two goals to help lead the Sun Devil soccer team to a 5-0 win over New Mexico State during the first day of play at the Cats Classic being hosted by the University of Arizona.
It was the fourth straight win for the Sun Devils (5-1-1), who scored five goals in a game for the second time this season.
With the two goals, Farquharson, who now has four goals on the year, moved into a tie for sixth place on ASU’s all-time list with 24 career goals.
The Sun Devils wasted no time getting on the board as Farquharson scored less than a minute into the game.
Less than 90 seconds later the Sun Devils struck again when freshman Jessica Raybe gathered in a pass from Alyssa Martinez, and chipped the ball over NMSU’s charging keeper to extend ASU’s lead to 2-0.
In the 32nd minute another freshman added to ASU’s goal total when Farquharson set up Jazmarie Mader whose sliding shot found the back of the net to put ASU up 3-0 at the half.
Farquharson scored her second goal of the game in the 51st minute and freshman Aly Moon added her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 56th minute.
Martinez had two assists in the win. She is in a five-way tie for first on the team in assists (Farquharson, Tommi Goodman, Lucy Lara and Mackenzie Semerad).
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Chandler Morris made four saves to record her second shutout of the season.
Since giving up eight goals in their first four games, the Sun Devils have only surrendered only one in their last three contests.
After missing the last two games due to injury, junior defender McKenzie Berryhill returned to the lineup and played 66 minutes.
Friday’s game was delayed more than an hour due to lightning in the area. The weather delay started during halftime.
The Sun Devils close out action at the Cats Classic on Sunday when they take on Nevada at noon.
