TUCSON, Ariz. - Starting left-hander Ryan Kellogg threw his second career shutout and the Arizona State University baseball team won the Territorial Cup series over Arizona, 7-0, on Saturday night at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Ariz.

The Sun Devils (23-16, 12-8) shut out the Wildcats in Tucson for the first time since May 11, 1972, behind Kellogg’s third consecutive win and third career start without allowing a run.

ASU took a 9.5-6.5 lead in the overall Territorial Cup standings as head coach Tim Esmay tallied his 14th win over Arizona and the program improved to 10-5 in series’ against the Wildcats in the past 15 years. ASU is a point away from winning the head-to-head competition with four sports still undecided.

Kellogg (6-2) struck out eight, his most in a Pac-12 Conference game in his two-year career, and scattered seven hits and two walks across the nine-inning shutout. The Wildcats (17-25, 6-14) loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning, but Kellogg struck out catcher Riley Moore to end the frame and went on to retire the next eight batters he faced. He allowed just one runner past second base over the final seven frames as 68 of his 103 pitches were thrown for strikes.

Shortstop Drew Stankiewicz ignited the Devils’ offense with a two-out, two-run double to right-center field in the fifth inning that gave ASU a 2-0 lead. Designated hitter RJ Ybarra followed with a two-run double of his own two batters later to extend their advantage, 4-0.

ASU added three runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by second baseman Tucker Esmay, a bases-loaded walk to first baseman Nate Causey and a sacrifice fly by Ybarra.

Left fielder Chris Beall tallied a career-high four hits and scored a pair of runs, and right fielder Jake Peevyhouse added two hits and two runs.

Wildcats starting right-hander Cody Hamlin (5-3) was responsible for all seven runs on nine hits and took the loss.

Notes
ASU moved to 215-240 all-time against Arizona, including 192-124 since 1959…the ASU pitching staff has turned in nine consecutive quality starts…ASU is 10-2 this season when they do not commit an error.
