CORVALLIS, Ore. – Starting left-hander Brett Lilek struck out a career-high eight, but the Arizona State University baseball team fell to fourth-ranked Oregon State, 4-0, on Friday night at Goss Stadium in Corvallis, Ore.

Lilek (3-1) held the Beavers scoreless for 4 1/3 innings before he surrendered three runs and was chased with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to take his first loss of the season. He did not allow a baserunner past second base in the first four frames, and gave up five hits and walked five in 4 2/3 frames.

The Beavers (19-3, 4-0) broke open the scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. They loaded the bases on two walks and a single before right fielder Dylan Davis drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to left field and designated hitter Gabe Clark followed with a two-run single to put OSU ahead, 3-0.

Sophomore left fielder Chris Beall and freshman shortstop Colby Woodmansee each singled to notch the Sun Devils’ (10-10, 1-3) only two hits of the game.

Lilek struck out the side in the bottom of the second and caught OSU left fielder Michael Conforto, who came into the game batting .400, looking at a pair of third strikes in the first and third innings, respectively.

Both teams put a player in scoring position in the fourth inning. The Devils had runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the frame, but Serven struck out to end the threat, and OSU first baseman Kavin Keyes doubled off the left-field wall to lead off the bottom of the inning, but Lilek responded with back-to-back strikeouts and induced a flyout to centerfield to keep Keyes stranded at second.

Sophomore Eric Melbostad induced a flyout to left field to the first batter he faced with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. He allowed one run on four hits and struck out a pair in 3 1/3 relief innings.

OSU starting left-hander Ben Wetzler (4-0) earned his fourth win of the season as he allowed two hits and one walk, and struck out eight, in seven innings.
