TEMPE, Ariz.--The No. 28 Arizona State University (8-2; Pac-12 0-0) women's tennis team improved to eight wins on the season on Saturday afternoon, downing the University of Nevada by a score of 7-0 on their on campus courts at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz.
Arizona State only dropped one set the entire day -- the No. 1 doubles match in a 8-4 decision that ended up being inconsequential in the final match score. The Sun Devils were able to capture wins on both courts two and three, earning the overall doubles point.
"I thought two and three doubles played pretty well, Kassidy (Jump) and Desirae (Krawczyk) didn't have one of their better days, but sometimes that happens," ASU head coach Sheila McInerney said. "Sometimes that happens against the better teams and I think that team was pretty good."
The Sun Devils swept the Wolfpack in all six singles matches winning straight sets on every single court except court two which saw Desirae Krawczyk defeat Sheila Morales Hidalgo of Nevada by a final score of 7-5, 7-6 (7). Krawczyk's match was one of the more competitive matches of the afternoon, running the longest out of all six matches.
"I don't think I played my best but I was able to pull it out, I just have to go out there and play better tomorrow," sophomore Desirae Krawczyk said. "I had more confidence coming out in that second set, but toward the end I started not doing my patterns which caused it to go to six-all and an even longer set."
The first singles match to finish on the day was that of Australian sophomore Ebony Panoho. The second year Sun Devil defeated her Nevada opponent in two quick sets 6-0, 6-2.
"(Assistant Coach) Ford (Oliver) was really helpful with me today, he just told me that I needed to play the way that I play which is using my forehand and if I could get some balls up on my opponent," Panoho said.
Clinching wins in between Panoho's and Krawczyk were junior Joanna Smith, freshman Kassidy Jump, junior Leighann Sahagun and sophomore Stephanie Vlad. Smith defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-3, Jump topped Sheila Smiley 6-2, 6-4, Sahagun competed in a tough 6-2, 6-2 match and Vlad protected the No. 1 home court winning by a score of 6-1, 6-4.
Arizona State will continue to wind down the non-conference schedule with a matchup against San Diego tomorrow afternoon at noon in Tempe, Ariz.
"We got a good match in today and we've got another good one against San Diego tomorrow," McInerney said. "Like I told the kids earlier about these matches, it's all about getting better. Use all these matches to continue to get better because we have no breaks, which is nice because we're going to be playing every single week."
