PULLMAN, Wash.--The 27th-ranked Arizona State women's tennis (8-3, 0-1 Pac-12) team fell to the Washington State Cougars, 5-2, Sunday in Pullman, Wash. The match against WSU is the first Pac-12 match of the season for the Sun Devils.
ASU started out strong taking the doubles point with victories by senior Michelle Brycki and freshman Joanna Smith and senior Sianna Simmons and freshman Leighann Sahagun. The pair of Brycki and Smith defeated Washington State's Fournier/Koning 8-4 for the first doubles victory. Simmons and Sahagun defeated Cougars Vasilieva/Musilovich by a score of 8-5.
Sophomore Jacqueline Cako defeated Liudmila Vasilieva in the No. 1 spot for the Sun Devils. Cako, ranked ninth in the nation, took the victory, 6-4, 6-4 over the 43rd-ranked Cougar. Senior Michelle Brycki, playing in the second spot in the line-up, battled Elisabeth Fournier into three sets. Despite taking the first set 6-4, Brycki dropped the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Next up, the Sun Devils head home to Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz. to host Pac-12 competition Oregon on Mar. 23 at 1:30 p.m. PT and Washington on Mar. 24 at Noon PT.
