The 19th ranked Arizona State women's tennis team opened the first round of the 10th annual Freeman Memorial Championships hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. this past Friday.
Overall, head coach Sheila McInerney was satisfied with the execution of the fundemental play and competition, for the first tournament of the year. "While we didn't win as many matches as we would have liked, I was pleased with how we competed and our overall play," said McInerney.
"It was great to have Nikki (Smith) back playing well after two injury plagued years. She played and competed well despite losing. She will only get better."
On a perfect 60 degree day, the Sun Devils were able to secure just one victory with Leighann Sahagun defeating Anett Ferenczi-Bako from UNLV 6-0 and 6-1. Sahagun will take on Skylar Morton of No. 5 UCLA on Saturday in the quarterfinals.
Although experiencing success in the singles, Sahagun paired with Nicole Smith in doubles, fell to third seeded Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton of UCLA, 9-8 (3). Michelle Brycki and Joanna Smith were defeated in a hard fought match by Hanna Mar and Annie Mulholland of No. 3 Duke, 8-6. The pairing of Sianna Simmons and Hannah James will play against Anett Ferenczi-Bako and Manon De Lanlay of UNLV on Saturay. Joanna Smith will compete against Ella Bourchier of UNLV in singles competition on Saturday as well.
"Michelle (Brycki) was a point or two away from beating a seeded player and Leighann Sahagun looked very good in her win. All in all we got in some good tennis against a high quality field and we are looking forward to tomorrow," said McInerney
