BERKELEY, Calf.--The Arizona State women's tennis team advances one singles player and one doubles pair after the first round of competition at the 2011 Cal Nike Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. on Friday.
Junior Hannah James advances to the semifinals on Saturday after winning her first and second round matches. James, ranked seventh in the tournament, defeated Megan Heneghan of UC Davis, 7-6 (5); 6-1 in the round of 32. The junior went on to battle California's Cessi Estlander into three sets taking the victory over the Golden Bear, 6-4; 2-6; 6-3.
Senior Michelle Brycki and freshman Joanna Smith also won their first round matches for the Sun Devils. Brycki handily defeated Fresno State's Bianca Modoc, 6-3; 6-2 in the Round of 32, while Smith defeated Saint Mary's Ana Chkhkivishvili, 6-3; 6-3.
In doubles action, the pair of Brycki and Nicole Smith defeated Nevada's Verberne/Okhremchuk 8-5 to compete in the semifinals on Saturday. Smith also advanced to the doubles semi finals after she was paired with Alison Ramos of USC. The mixed pair defeated Tran/Price of BYU, 8-1.
The second day of competition of the Cal Nike Invitational continues tomorrow at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
