Sept. 10, 2011

Final Stats

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Arizona State volleyball fell to 19th-ranked San Diego, 3-0, on Saturday in the second day of play at the UNC Carolina Classic. The Toreros handed ASU its first three-set loss of the season with scores of 25-23, 25-20, 25-20.

With the loss, A-State moves to 4-4 on the year as USD continues its winning streak at 9-0.

In the first frame, the Sun Devils hit at a .282 clip despite falling 25-23. ASU led until the 6-6 mark before USD made a 4-1 run to take a 10-7 advantage. Not to be outdone, ASU battled back as the score would tie 14 times with eight lead changes.

A late advantage at 22-21 was not enough as San Diego tied it at 22-22 and eventually took the set at 25-23 with kills from Amber Tatsch and a service ace by Carrie Baird.

Set two and three were relatively close until the midway point of the stanzas. Arizona State led the second frame until 15-15 but allowed a five-point run, putting itself in a 19-16 hole. The Sun Devils were able to close the gap at 21-20 but that was as close as it would get with the Toreros running away with the set at 25-20.

In the final frame ASU opened with a kill by Erica Wilson, who had a team-high 12 on the day. Attack errors were costly, causing the team to go down 15-6 before Wilson, Danica Mendivil and Sarah McGaffin combined for a three-point run. San Diego was too much to handle though, winning the set 25-20 without giving up the lead since the opening points.

The Sun Devils return at 4:30 p.m. (PT) to take on tournament-host UNC.
