BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 13 Arizona State women’s tennis team wrapped up their West Coast road trip with a tough loss on Saturday to No. 10 California Golden Bears, 4-3.
The Sun Devils were unable to pull off a win despite long-fought matches in both singles and doubles, although they had previously upset Cal at home in Tempe, Ariz. The loss puts Arizona State’s record at 13-5, with a 3-2 record in Pac-10 play.
The Bears won the doubles point, winning two of three matches. No. 3 ranked Mari Andersson and Jana Juricova won over No. 18 Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein with a score of 8-5, and Annie Goransson teamed up with Anett Schutting to defeat Michelle Brycki and Jacqueline Cako, 8-5. The duo of Ashlee Brown and Sianna Simmons notched the only ASU win, defeating Tayler Davis and Duranteau 8-3.
The Devils won half of their singles matches, but it was not enough to come back and win the meet after losing the doubles point to Cal. Freshman Cako, ranked eleventh coming into the meet, defeated Mari Andersson, who was ranked eighteenth, battling through the third set to win 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2). Micaela Hein and Michelle Brycki snagged the other two singles wins for the Devils. Hein won over Anett Schutting, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Brycki defeated Marina Cossou after losing her first set, then winning her second and third sets with a tough back-and-forth battle, finally winning the match 1-6, 7-6 (8), 7-5.
No. 19 senior McKenna dropped her first spot match to No. 2 Juricova in only two sets, 7-5, 6-3. Annie Goransson won over Hannah James in the fourth spot, 6-1, 6-1. Ashlee Brown battled in the sixth spot but lost to Tayler Davis, 6-4, 7-5.
The Devils return to Tempe next weekend as they face USC on Friday at Whiteman Tennis Center. ASU upset USC earlier in the season when they played in California.
