TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State volleyball team opened its weekend with a 3-1 victory against Colorado on Friday night with set scores of 23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-19.
Ashley Kastl led the Sun Devil (7-19, 3-14 Pac-12) offense with 18 kills while Nora Tuioti-Mariner was close behind with 17. Both recorded a double-double, adding to their stat lines 10 and 12 digs, respectively.
Kerra Schroeder tallied 13 kills for Colorado as the Buffs fall to 5-21 overall and 0-18 in league play.
Despite a slow first set that saw the score tie nine times, the Sun Devils were able to bounce back from dropping the frame 25-23 to hit above the .230 mark the rest of the evening.
The second frame ASU worked from behind at 4-7 to tie it at 10-10 after kills from Kylee Terhune and Erica Wilson. Terhune finished with nine kills overall and Wilson boasted 11.
Arizona State gained momentum with a four-point lead at 20-16 and held on to the set 25-22 to head into the break tied one set apiece.
In the third set the Sun Devils did not give up their lead built in the early goings, running off with the frame 25-16 with assistance from a collective .480 attacking clip.
Kastl provided six kills in the final set as Tuioti-Mariner collected an additional four to aid the 25-19 set clincher.
ASU had as much of an eight-point lead at 16-8, but a rally from the CU bench saw the Buffaloes close the gap at 20-17. The Sun Devils were able to take the match after a Tuioti-Mariner kill sealed the set.
Sun Devil volleyball returns to Wells Fargo arena Saturday at 7 p.m. to face off against Utah.
