SEATTLE - Heroic efforts helped the Arizona State volleyball team push No. 10 Washington to five sets on Friday night, but the Huskies took the victory in set scores of 25-20, 22-25, 25-14, 22-25, 15-13.
The Sun Devils fall to 5-17 overall and 1-12 in the Pac-12 while Washington moves to 17-4 overall and 9-4 in conference play.
Ashley Kastl led all offensive attackers with 17 kills while a trio of Sun Devils chipped in with nine kills apiece in Sonja Markanovich, Erica Wilson and Nora Tuioti-Mariner.
The fifth and deciding set saw nine tie scores and four lead changes with neither team breaking past a one-point lead before Washington pulled ahead to claim the match with a final set score of 15-13.
UW took the first frame 25-20 after hitting a .276 attack percentage. A-State powered back in the second however, hitting at a .297 clip to even the match at 1-1, tallying a stanza in favor of the maroon and gold with a score of 25-22.
Arizona State's offense stalled in the third set with only eight kills produced to eight attack errors - making a quick downfall of 25-14 to fall behind 2-1.
In the fourth, ASU built a commanding 18-10 lead with kills from Tuioti-Mariner, Kastl and Wilson. UW fought back to close the gap at 22-20 but the Sun Devils were unwilling to relinquish their lead, holding on to a 25-22 win with final attacks from Markanovich and Kylee Terhune.
Arizona State returns Saturday for a 7 p.m. (PT) match at Washington State.
