BERKELEY, Calif.—The Arizona State women’s tennis continued its success in the second round of the Cal Nike Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. Saturday. Despite dropping out of tournament title contention, the Sun Devils picked up for wins on the day.
Junior Hannah James fell to Californa’s Jana Juricova, who was ranked No. 1 in the ITA Preseason Singles poll. Juricova defeated James, 6-4; 6-0. However, James was successful in her consolations doubles matches with partner Sianna Simmons. James and Simmons defeated Fresno State’s McQueen/Murtagh, 8-5 in the quarterfinals and then went on to defeat the fourth-ranked doubles pair of No. 4 Chui/Heneghan from UC Davis. With the victories, James and Simmons will compete in the consolation championship on Sunday.
Also earning victories for the Sun Devils were the doubles pair of Michelle Brycki and Nicole Smith. In a hard-fought victory, Brycki/Smith defeated the Cal pair of Goransson/Davis, 9-8 (2). However, in the doubles semifinal round, Brycki/Smith fell to No. 2 Baca/Melluk of Sacramento State.
The final day of the Cal Nike Invitational concludes tomorrow at the Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley, Calif.
