TEMPE, Ariz. – Sarah Reaves added another career accolade Saturday as she moved to sixth-place in ASU career kills records with 13 kills to push her to 1,382 while ASU wrapped their first home tournament taking on the Utah State Aggies for a shot at the tournament crown. It wasn’t to be though as the undefeated Aggies remained as such sweeping ASU in a 25-18, 25-22 and 25-17. Utah State went on to take the tournament title and raise their record to 6-0 on the season as ASU falls to 2-3 overall.
The first set USU was unstoppable, hitting an amazing .500 on the set with tournament MVP Liz McArthur throwing down seven kills. The Sun Devils couldn’t adjust to the USU middles as well as the Aggies posted three blocks in the set to stifle the ASU attack and run off with a 25-18 win.
Set two saw USU’s Chelsea Fowles and Liz McArthur tag team back again as Fowles put up 10 assists with McArthur knocking down seven of them again. Ashley Kastl gave it an effort with five kills to swing .294 but two more Aggie blocks plagued the Sun Devils as they fell to 0-2 headed into the break with a 25-22 loss.
With the third set being the bread and butter of the Sun Devils season thus far, ASU looked to come out with some fire and finally bested USU in blocks with 2.5 to the Aggies 2.0. The effort wouldn’t hold though as the offense suffered 11 unforced errors that USU gobbled up along with their .385 attack percentage to close out the sweep 25-17.
In the highlight of the match, Sarah Reaves took over the sixth spot in ASU career kills surpassing for all-star player and coach, Jami Coughlin. Reaves needs only 11 more kills to overtake Valentina Vega’s 1,392 career kills.
