PULLMAN, Wash. -
The Arizona State women's tennis team opened Pac-10 play with a win over Washington State. The No. 44 Sun Devils topped the Cougars 5-2 to improve their record to 5-3 with a 1-0 record in the Pac-10.
"It was a nice day in Pullman, in the high 50s, so we got to play outside which was nice," said 26th year head coach Sheila McInerney. "You can't complain about any Pac-10 road win."
The Sun Devils swept doubles to earn the doubles point. On court one, the team of Micaela Hein and Nadia Abdala defeated Lea Jansen and Elisabeth Fournier 8-2. Kelcy McKenna and Hannah James paired up to earn an 8-2 win over Liudmila Vasilieva and Andjela Kankaras. Finally, in the No. 3 spot, Michelle Brycki and Nicole Smith picked up an 8-3 victory.
"We won doubles pretty easily," said McInerney. "I though they played pretty well."
Four singles matches went in favor of the Sun Devils. Playing the No. 2 slot for the first time all season, Hein topped Fournier 6-2 in the first set before gutting out a 7-5 second set victory to leave Pullman with a win. McKenna dominated Ksenia Googe in the No. 3 position, topping the Cougar 6-2, 6-3. Brycki continued her flawless dual match play, earning a solid 6-0, 6-3 win over Marina Nicolas. In the No. 6 slot, sophomore Sianna Simmons earned a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Jansen.
"Overall I'm pleased with how they played," said McInerney. "The girls finished early, it was a quick match."
The Sun Devils head to Seattle tonight and will face the No. 18 Washington Huskies tomorrow at noon.
