The No. 23 Arizona State University women's tennis team dropped a tough 6-1 contest against No. 12 Stanford on Friday afternoon, moving them to 11-3 (3-1 Pac 10). Stanford improved to 12-1 (1-0 Pac-10).
In doubles action, the Sun Devils dropped all three matches, giving Stanford the doubles point. Nadia Abdala and Micaela Hein battled but ultimately fell 8-3 to the No. 2 ranked Stanford duo of Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette at the No. 1 spot. Hannah James and Kelcy McKenna fell to the No. 24 ranked Stanford pair, Mallory Burdette and Stacy Tan 8-2. Nicole Smith and Michelle Brycki were last off the court with an 8-4 loss to Veronica Li and Carolyn McVeigh at the No. 3 position.
"It was a tough one," said Coach McInerney. "Stanford took it to us in doubles. I was a little disappointed in the doubles. They had us on our heels and played more aggressive. However, I thought we rebounded and played tough in singles."
In singles action, James was first off the court, losing a tough match up against 66th ranked Tan at the No. 4 spot. Brycki finished next, with a convincing victory over 85th ranked Carolyn McVeigh 6-1, 6-3. Brycki continues to be undefeated in dual match play this spring. Hein battled hard at the No. 1 spot, ultimately falling to the eighth ranked Barte.
McKenna took the first set from her opponent, before falling in three sets to No. 40 Lindsay Burdette at the No. 2 spot. Nadia Abdala won her first set 6-4, before falling 3-5, 4-6 to No. 36 ranked Mallory Burdette at the No. 3 spot. Sianna Simmons battled hard, falling just short, with a 6-7, 6-7 loss to Li.
Coach McInerney said, "We had our chances. Sianna was up 5-4 in a breaker; Kelcy won the first set and Nadia had a tough three setter."
The Devils are looking forward to tomorrow's match up against the Cal Bears, which is their final home match of the year as well as Senior Day. The match begins at 12 noon at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
