The No. 18 Arizona State women's tennis team finished off their spring break strong, sweeping the Brigham Young Cougars 7-0 and improving to 11-2 overall. This is the Sun Devils' eighth straight win.
"It was a great way to end spring break," said 26th year head coach Sheila McInerney. "I thought we played well. BYU came out and played well. I thought the top of their line up in particular was very strong."
In doubles action, Michelle Brycki and Nicole Smith took out BYU's Elizaveta Ezhova and Romina Nedakovic 8-3. Nadia Abdala and Micaela Hein were next off the court, winning the doubles point for the Devils, with an 8-4 win over McCall Jones and Kristina Doerr. Ashlee Brown and Kelcy McKenna wrapped up their match with an 8-5 over Elle Carney and Chie Hayasaka.
In singles action, Sianna Simmons took out Liza Ezhova 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot. Michelle Brycki followed her lead, ousting Elle Carney 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot. Senior Nadia Abdala clinched the match for the Devils, with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Romina Nedakovic at the No. 3 spot.
Hannah James got the best of her opponent, earning herself a 6-3, 6-4 win over Chie Hayasaka at the No. 4 spot. In an intense battle on court one, Micaela Hein lost her first set 4-6, before battling back to win in three sets over No. 53 Jones. Kelcy McKenna finished off the match for the Devils, with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Kristina Doerr.
"Micaela was really tough," said McInerney. "After losing the first set she fought back to win in three. Kelcy battled hard and Nadz [Nadia Abdala] played well. I was happy the way the match turned out. It was a match we were expected to win and sometimes those matches are the hardest to win, and to win the way we did was great."
