SAN DIEGO, Calif.--It was a day of endurance for the Arizona State women's tennis team, as four of the singles matches went to either three sets or a tie-breaker.
Freshman Jacqueline Cako, playing her first tennis for the Sun Devils, defeated Arizona's Natasha Marks (2-6; 6-2; 6-1) in the round of 32 and UCLA's McCall Jones (7-5; 7-6 (7)) in the round of 16 to move on to quarterfinals play on Saturday.
"Jacqueline had a good day," said head coach Sheila McInerney. "She's in the quarterfinals and had two good wins. She really grinded it out and I thought she competed really well at the end to win the tie-breaker [against UCLA's Jones]."
McInerney sees promise in the freshman's first outing for Arizona State, after Cako was sidelined with mono for the first part of the fall season.
"It was good for her and hopefully, physically, she'll hold up for tomorrow."
Also competing in the round of 32 were both Micaela Hein, seeded seventh, and Hannah James, seeded 15th. James dropped a contentious match-up with UCLA's Pam Montez, with James taking the first set only to battle out the final two with Montez to the end. Montez would win the match 4-6; 7-5; 6-4.
Hein also played a hard-fought match-up with Kaitlyn Christian of USC, one of the top freshman players in the nation, with the Sun Devil falling 6-2; 3-6; 6-2).
Paired together for the first time in doubles, Cako and Hein cruised, beating Malenoska and Manasse of Long Beach State 8-3.
In the consolation round, Michelle Brycki defeated both Anna Yang of Cal State Northridge (6-2, 6-2) and Julia Truck of San Diego State, who invoked a walk over to forfeit the match.
Both Sianna Simmons and Ashlee Brown fell in their consolation matches with Simmons losing to Sarah Cantlay of Long Beach State (6-3; 0-6,; 10-7) and Brown dropping the match to Anais Dallara, also from Long Beach State (6-4; 6-3).
Cako continues on to the quarterfinals on Saturday against No. 1 seeded Maria Sanchez of USC at 10 a.m. The freshman will also compete in doubles with Hein against Issara and Walters of Pepperdine.
