Berkeley, Calif.-- The Sun Devil women's tennis team continued their success at the Cal Nike Invitational on Saturday, as the doubles duo of Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein advanced in doubles play, and McKenna won her semifinals match against Michelle Brycki to continue to the semifinals.
"It was a good day," said head coach Sheila McInerney. "I was really satisfied with our performance overall."
McKenna and Hein breezed through their quarterfinal match, defeating Annie Goransson and Tayler Davis from California 8-6. They then faced No. 2 seeded Rebecca Delgado and Tatsiana Kapshai from Sacramento State, and were victorious, winning 8-2 in the semifinals.
In other doubles play, Brycki and Sianna Simmons fell to Jana Juricova and Mari Andersson of California 8-4. The duo of Ashlee Brown and Hannah James were defeated in their match against Clarisse Baca and Maria Meliuk of Sacramento State, holding their own but finally falling 8-6.
In a quarterfinal singles match, McKenna swept Brycki in their match-up 6-0, 6-2. Hein won her consolation match against Sarah Landsman from Arizona in a back-and-forth battle, finally gaining victory 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6).
"It was a very good result for Kelcy," said Coach McInerney. "For her to be here, I feel really good for her. She had a bit of a rough year last year, so for her to come back and do this well is fantastic."
Three other Sun Devils competed in the round robin tournament, but only one gained victory. Brown defeated Ania Jeczmionka of Long Beach State in a set going 6-4, 4-6, and 1-0 (10-4). James competed against Jaklin Alawi from Long Beach State, but fell 6-3, 6-2. Simmons faced Anais Dallara from Long Beach State, and was swept 6-2, 6-4.
Semifinals matches for singles play will begin Sunday, with McKenna facing Alexandra Poorta from St. Mary's, and Hein playing against Jenifer Widjaja from Pacific. The All-American duo of McKenna and Hein are set to face No. 1 seeded Jana Juricova and Mari Andersson of California in the semifinals.
