The Arizona State women's tennis team completed day one of the Freeman Memorial. The doubles teams swept each of their matches and will continue on tomorrow.
Micaela Hein paired up with Nadia Abdala as the duo took down Oregon's Sabine Fuchs and Trudie du Toit 8-3. All-American Kelcy McKenna and newcomer Hannah James partnered together to earn an 8-4 victory over Katrina Tsang and Shinann Featherston. The Sun Devils final doubles team of Ashlee Brown and Sianna Simmons gutted out an 8-5 triumph against Pavlina Smatova and Julia Metzger to earn the final doubles victory of the day.
Singles started out well for the Sun Devils as four of the six who competed earned first round wins. Abdala outlasted Claire Bartlett of Florida, going 7-5, 6-4 to move onto the second round. Sixth seeded Kelcy McKenna outlasted UNLV's Carling Seguso, winning 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Ashlee Brown also got the best out of three sets against Jana Albers of UNLV, earning a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 victory. Seventh seeded Micaela Hein came back after dropping her first set to win 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The second round did not fare so well for the Devils as none of the singles players advanced on to the next round. Despite taking UNC's Sophie Grabinski to three sets, McKenna was upset 5-7, 7-6, 7-6. Abdala dropped her match to the No. 1 seed Mallory Burdette 6-0, 6-3. Brown fell 6-4, 6-1 to Stanford's Stacy Tan. Hein came back after losing her first set to Florida's Anastasia Revzina but could not hang on, falling 7-6, 2-6, 6-1.
The Sun Devils continue play tomorrow.
