TEMPE, Ariz. - A stingy defensive effort and the first goal of freshman Kiara Williams' career proved to be enough for the Arizona State women's soccer team on Friday night as it defeated Old Dominion 1-0.

Coming off a loss to Kansas on Sunday, the Sun Devils (3-1-0) bounced back with a strong showing, which included allowing Old Dominion (2-2-0) to post only two shots on goal for the entire match.

"I thought we played better in terms of moving the ball," ASU head coach Kevin Boyd said following the game. "Old Dominion is a good team [and] I thought they played quite well. It was a pretty even first half... I thought we were all over them in the second half and couldn't put it away."

The only score of the contest came in the 39th minute when junior Lindsey Johns slipped a pass in traffic to Williams, who then dribbled down field, made a move on her defender and fired a shot into the far left post for the goal.

"Kiara Williams hit a terrific goal," Boyd said. "She got down, beat a player inside and hit a left footer that bent off the post and into the goal."

Junior Jill Shoquist and freshman Bianca Doller tied for the team lead with two shots while senior goalkeeper Briana Silvestri made a pair of saves to notch her second shutout of the season and take over sole possession of third place for most career shutouts in school history (14).

The Sun Devils return to action on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. when they host No. 8 Virginia (defeated Arizona 4-1 in game one of Sun Devil Desert Classic) at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The game will be preceded by Arizona taking on Old Dominion at 11 a.m.
