The Arizona State swimming and diving teams got off to a solid start in their respective invitationals today. The women's swimming team is currently in second place at the Mizzou Invitational with 266 points while the men stand in sixth with 115.5 points. Success was also found for the Sun Devils in the diving well at the Ohio State Invitational where the diving team is competing there.
Mizzou Invitational
Several Sun Devils earned NCAA "B" standard times. The 200 free relay team of Shannon Landgrebe, Katie Haron, Samantha Caldwell and Ashley Evans clocked in the first consideration time of the night as they raced to a time of 1:32.28 to place second overall. The ASU "B" squad of Paige Schultz, Sara McDaniel, Penelope Yamauchi, and Jamie Martinez finished right behind them, with a team of 1:33.25.
The Sun Devils were most successful in the 200 IM. Senior Ashley Evans and sophomore Xavier Mohammed won the women's and men's race respectively with each earning an NCAA consideration. Mohammed earned his first NCAA "B" cut by finishing the 200 IM in 1:49.28. Evans hit the wall at 2:00.62, a second and a half victory over second place finisher Paige Schultz who came in at 2:02.12. Evans is now third on ASU's all-time list in the 200 IM while Schultz is sixth. Jamie Martinez placed fourth in the event with a time of 2:04.03 while Yamauchi was right after her at 2:04.70.
Freshman Cassie Morrice clocked in her first NCAA "B" cut of her career as she finished second in the 500 free. The Canadian touched the wall at 4:49.46, finishing about a second out of first place. Morrice's fellow countrywoman, Shannon Garrett, placed second in the "B" final with a time of 4:55.31 while Caroline Kuczynski clocked in at 4:55.31 to place third in the "B" final. On the men's side, freshman Caleb Veazey placed second in the "B" final of the 500 free with a time of 4:33.32.
Haron was the top Sun Devil finisher in the 50 free. The junior East Coaster clocked in at 23.38 to finish fourth. Evans was the first one to touch the wall in the "B" final, earning a time of 23.53. On the men's side, Nolan Ruane finished second in the "B" final finishing in 21.36.
The ASU women's team of Martinez, Jordyn Green, Kuczynski and Haron was victorious in the final event of the evening. The team earned an NCAA "B" standard with a time 3:42.56 to close out the night.
Ohio State Invitational
Cameron Bradshaw scored 361.20 points to finish third on the 1-meter. Not only was his point total an NCAA "A" score, but it also marks a personal record for the sophomore, who is diving in his home state this weekend. Ciara Geller was the top Sun Devil finisher for the women, placing 11th with 245.55 in the 3-meter.
