The Arizona State University women's tennis team completed day two of the Cal Nike Invitational. The Sun Devils had four of the five players they sent competing both doubles and singles. Despite yesterday's multiple triumphs, the Sun Devils struggled some in the second day.
"It was a bit of a disappointing day today," said 26th year head coach Sheila McInerney. "We didn't play as well as we did yesterday nor as well as we needed to."
The All-American doubles team of Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein breezed past Annie Goransson and Marina Cossou of California, blanking the Golden Bear team 8-0. The Sun Devil duo could not stop Andrea Remynse and Yasmin Schnak of UCLA; however, as they fell 8-4 in the semifinals. Ashlee Brown and Sianna Simmons dropped their consolation match 8-2 to McCall Jones and Megan Price of BYU.
In singles, Brown was the lone ASU winner of the day. The Australian junior defeated BYU's Price 6-2, 6-2. McKenna, the reigning Cal Nike champion, was upset by USC's Valeria Pulido; falling 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Hein, who was the seventh seed in the tournament, dropped her quarterfinal match as well. Hein fell 6-2, 6-2 to Jana Juricova, who is currently ranked fourth in the nation.
"It was nice to see Ashlee win that singles match," said McInerney. "It will be good to get some more matches in tomorrow."
The Sun Devils will complete play at the Cal Nike Invitational tomorrow.
