The Arizona State women's tennis team enjoyed a successful second day at the Wilson/ITA Regional Championships, held in San Diego, Calif. Two singles players advanced to the quarterfinals as well as a doubles team.
Returning All-American Kelcy McKenna notched two more wins on her season as she blasted past Alyssa Nafarrete of Hawaii in the Round of 32. The native of Oregon won in straight sets, defeating Nafarrete 6-2, 6-1. In the Round of 16, McKenna prevailed in a tough 7-6 first set before downing April Bisharat of UC Irvine 6-0 in the second set.
Micaela Hein continued to have a stellar tournament. Hein, who received All-American accolades in doubles last season, picked up two more wins to advance to the quarterfinals. She topped Valeria Pulido-Velasco of USC 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 32 before handing Juliette Coupez of San Diego a 6-4, 6-4 loss in the Round of 16.
"Micaela played exceptional," said 26th year head coach Sheila McInerney. "She had two good wins. She is healthy and playing so well here after struggling in the last tournament."
Michelle Brycki also competed in the main draw, but could not hold off Natasha Marks of Arizona as she dropped her match 6-1, 6-2. In the consolation bracket, Ashlee Brown picked up two wins on the day. Brown first blanked LMU's Maria Garcia-Planas 6-0, 6-0 and then defeated Northridge's Brooke Doan 6-4, 6-4. Sianna Simmons blanked her opponent, Amira Massi of Northridge, 6-0, 6-0.
Doubles saw one win and one loss for the Sun Devils. The duo of Brown and Hein held off Pepperdine's Oates and Zalameda 8-6. They will advance to the quarterfinals. McKenna and Simmons dropped their match to Arizona's Marks and Rietch 8-3.
The tournament continues through tomorrow.
