TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Anthony Goods scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half to lead four Stanford players in double figures Thursday night and the Cardinal spoiled the Pac-10 debut of Arizona State coach Herb Sendek with a 71-60 victory over the Sun Devils.
Goods was just 1-for-9 from the field but made 11-of-13 free throws for Stanford (8-2, 1-0). Taj Finger also scored 14 and Lawrence Hill 13. Freshman Landry Fields scored all 11 of his points in the first half for the Cardinals.
Jeff Pendergraph had 17 points and 11 rebounds for Sun Devils (6-6, 0-1). Christian Polk was the only other Arizona State player in double figures with 11 points.
Stanford took the lead for good late in the first half, withstood an Arizona State rally midway through the second, then pulled away for the victory.
Down 33-24 at the half, the Sun Devils cut it to 43-37 on Pendergraph's three-point play with 13:58 to play. But the Cardinal responded with a 9-0 spurt, capped by Robin Lopez's dunk and Stanford led 52-37 8:22 from the finish. Arizona State never got closer than 11 again.
Carlton Weatherby sank a 3-pointer during the decisive surge.
Stanford outscored the Sun Devils 14-3 over the final five minutes of the first half to go up 33-24 at the break.
Fields was 4-for-5 shooting, 3-for-4 on 3-pointers, for 11 first-half points.
The Sun Devils shot just 39 percent in the first half (10-for-26) and were 2-for-10 on 3s.
Stanford dominated the game at the foul line, going 24-for-35 to Arizona State's 11-for-17.
The Sun Devils dropped to .500 for the first time this season under Sendek, who left North Carolina State to take the Arizona State job.
