TEMPE, Ariz. - Freshman LHP Ike Davis went 7.1 innings, scattering four hits and allowing only one run to help lead the Sun Devils to a 5-3 victory over the Northern Illinois Huskies at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. ASU earned the victory despite stranding 12 base runners.
The story of the game was Ike Davis, who was making only his second career start. He was handed an early 1-0 lead, after Willy Fox singled in Colin Curtis to put the Sun Devils up in the first inning. ASU would add another run in the second when Preston Paramore knocked in CJ Retherford to give the Devils a two-run lead. ASU would add a run in the third and the fifth, while Davis continued to mow down Husky batters. Spotted a 4-0 lead, Davis cruised through the Northern Illinois line-up, striking out eight hitters while allowing only four hits.
After the Sun Devils added another run to take a five run lead, the Huskies mounted a comeback in the eighth inning, when Davis was touched for his only run. Davis, who also went 1-4 with an RBI in the DH spot, left with one out in the eighth and ASU up 5-0. After Brady Martinez and Brett Bordes allowed three runs to score, Zechry Zinicola came in and slammed the door on the NIU comeback bid.
The Sun Devils, who rapped out 11 hits, struggled to take advantage of scoring opportunities, but the left arm of Davis was enough to carry them to their third straight victory. ASU and NIU will play again tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch slated for 1:00 PM.
