TEMPE, Ariz. - The 78th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays came to a close Saturday evening at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas, with several members of the Arizona State University track and field team recording impressive marks on the final day of the meet. Gusty winds pushed the sprinters' times to new levels on the day that saw six individuals and two relays compete for the Sun Devils.
In the field, Brandon Glenn finished seventh in the `A' section of the men's pole vault as he cleared a personal-best 5.30m (17-04.50). His mark, a 15 centimeter improvement, pushed him into a tie for the second-highest clearance in ASU history with Steve Tully (1984) while also making him just the sixth Sun Devil to crack the 17-foot barrier. Nick Hysong, the 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist in the event, holds the school record at 5.70m (18-08.25).
Rounding out the field event competitors for ASU was the throwing trio of Jessica Pressley, Julia Pedersen and Jennifer Kowacz in the women's `A' section of the shot put. Pressley led the way with a runner-up finish at 16.48m (54-01.00) with Pedersen taking fourth at 15.88m (52-01.25) and Kowacz seventh at 14.99m (49-02.25). All three marks meet regional qualification standards.
On the track, the men's 4x100m relay of Steven Koehnemann, Domenik Peterson, Seth Amoo and Lewis Banda clocked in at 38.96 to take second in a very close race that saw the quartet from LSU win the meet at 38.94. Peterson, Amoo and Banda came back later with Jason Barton to compete in the 4x400m relay where they also place second. This time, their 3:02.77 was bettered by Florida, which won the race in 3:02.47.
Amoo also competed in the 100m dash and, with a wind reading of 2.5, finished fifth in the race with a time of 10.29. Had the wind reading been below 2.0, Amoo's time would have ranked eighth on the ASU lists. Wind also assisted Porchea Carroll in the women's 100m dash as she clocked in at 11.31 with a tail wind reading of 5.7 to finish sixth overall. Just as with Amoo, her time would have been a school record had the wind been below 2.0. That time also would have put her in the Top 10 on the Pac-10 list.
The Sun Devils return to action next weekend as they are set to compete in a trio of meets. The highlight event of the weekend will be the 26th running of the Sun Angel Classic presented by Coca-Cola Saturday at Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe. Several members of the team will travel to the Azusa Pacific Multi-Events meet Thursday and Friday while others will travel across town to take part in the Mesa Classic on Friday.
