BERKELEY, Calif. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Nicole Morton and Colette Meek each recorded 12 kills, but it wasn't enough as the Arizona State Sun Devils dropped its Pac-10 volleyball opener in four games to No. 16 California Thursday night at Haas Pavilion.

The Sun Devils dropped to 5-4 with their fourth straight loss to the Golden Bears. California improves to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in conference action. The Sun Devils take on No. 12 Stanford Friday night at 7 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.

Meek (Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada) added four blocks for a team-high 14.5 points. Morton (Bonsall, Calif.) has led or tied for the team lead in kills in six of ASU's nine matches this season.

Freshman libero Sydney Donahue (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) led the Sun Devils with 18 digs. Freshman setter Rachel Mittelstaedt (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded 40 assists and tied for the team lead with four blocks.

Senior Gabrielle Abernathy recorded a match high 18 kills on a .333 hitting percentage for the Golden Bears. Camille Lefall (11 kills), Jenna Brown (11 kills) and Alicia Powers (10 kills) also recorded double-digits in the kills. Samantha Carter led all players with 59 assists and libero Jillian Davis recorded 24 digs.
