TEMPE, Ariz. - In a hard fought, up and down season opener for both teams the fifth-ranked Florida State Seminoles (1-0) came out on top as they edged 20th-ranked Arizona State (0-1), 3-2, in Tallahassee on Friday night at the Nike Seminole Classic. The Sun Devils tallied the first and last goals of the match, while FSU tallied all three goals in between. ASU came on strong at the end with a late goal and nearly tied the match with three seconds remaining, but the shot deflected off the Seminole goalkeeper's hands.
The Devils wasted little time getting on the scoreboard to open the 2004 season as sophomore Katie Mahoney tallied the first goal of the year with an assist from junior Manya Makoski at the 1:09 mark. Mahoney, who got behind the FSU defense, took the feed from Makoski and shot the ball pass goalkeeper Joy McKenzie.
However, Florida State came right back and tied the match with a goal at the 5:24 mark off of a header that occurred by the back post by Camie Bybee. The Seminoles then forged ahead 2-1 in the 36th minute on a goal by Julia Schnugg. The goal was assisted by Bybee and Leah Gallegos, who slid the ball thru the Devils defense to a breaking Schnugg.
ASU looked to tie the match just two minutes later when Mahoney drilled a shot from the top of the box off of the Florida State crossbar, but ASU was unable to collect the ball for another shot. The half ended with Florida State holding a slight edge in shots at 5-4 and 2-1 in corner kicks.
FSU then gained control of the match early in the second half and went up 3-1 in the 53rd minute. Schnugg posted her second goal of the night when Kelly Rowland lofted a long ball to Schnugg, springing her free for the score.
ASU finally cut the lead to 3-2 when Elizabeth Bogus netted her shot in the 81st minute of action. Makoski received the ball and dumped it in where Bogus collected the lose ball kicking it into the far lower left corner.
Then with just three seconds remaining in the match, Courtney Crane nearly equalized the score as she collected the lose ball and unleashed a hard shot that deflected off the FSU goalkeeper's fingers to end the match.
In an evenly fought match, FSU and ASU each ended up with eight shots, four corner kicks and two saves apiece.
Up next, the Devils will conclude play at the Nike Seminole Classic on Sunday when they take on the Rams of Rhode Island at 8:00 a.m. (Arizona time).
