The fourth-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils defeated the Miami Redhawks 15-7 tonight at Packard Stadium before a crowd of 4,213. ASU improves to 43-13 on the season while Miami falls to 39-22.
With the win, ASU plays Texas, winner of the afternoon game, at 3 p.m. MST in the winners bracket. Miami will face Creighton at 11 a.m. in an elimination game.
ASU jumped out of the gate early scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first. The inning included senior outfielder Mitch Jones' 27th homerun of the season - a three-run shot to left centerfield which scored Jeff Duncan and Casey Myers.
The Devils would score in all but two innings (the fifth and seventh) but leave 13 men on base.
Winning pitcher for Arizona State was reliever Will Waldrip (6-1) who pitched four shutout innings, allowing only two hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Taking the loss for the Redhawks was starter Nathan Tekavec (9-6) who lasted only 1.1 innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits with three walks and three K's.
For the Devils, Casey Myers went 4-for-4 with five RBI and three runs scored. Myers now has 94 RBI on the season which ranks fourth all-time at ASU. Jonah Martin went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI while Mitch Jones had a 2-for-4 effort with four RBI. Myers hit his 17th homerun of the season during the game.
For Miami (Ohio), George Stegmiller went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Joe Spain collected a team-high two RBI on the night.
Seven batters were hit by pitchers from both teams (three by ASU and four by Miami). Myers was a triple away from hitting for the cycle.
