WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-Arizona State sophomore forward Theresa Jantzen tallied 22 points and nine rebounds as the Sun Devils held off Wake Forest 70-65 at Reynolds Gymnasium on Friday night. With the victory, Arizona State improves to 3-0 on the season, the first 3-0 start for ASU since 1991-92. That Sun Devil squad reeled off a school-record nine victories to open the season en route to a 20-9 overall record and ASU's last NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Sun Devils used a 13-2 run late in the first period to break open a close game and went into the locker room at halftime with a 37-27 advantage. Jantzen, who has scored in double figures in each of ASU's games this season, had 10 of her 22 points in the first half to pace the Sun Devils.
Wake Forest (1-2 on the year) went on an 8-0 run early in the second period to get within two points, but Arizona State gradually pulled ahead again to lead by as many as nine. The Demon Deacons rallied again late in the game, cutting the deficit to three on a three-pointer by senior guard Alisha Mosley with 11 seconds to play. But ASU junior guard Liz Paulson nailed two free throws in the game's final seconds to seal the win.
For the victorious Sun Devils, freshman forward Sarah Allen notched career highs with 14 points, two three-pointers and three steals, while senior guard Kitch Kitchen scored 10 points and matched her career best with five steals.
Arizona State outrebounded the Deacs 30-25 and hit 23 of 30 free throws, while WFU went to the line just eight times. Wake Forest shot an impressive 55 percent from the floor (28-51) but committed 23 turnovers, 19 of which came in the first half.
The Sun Devils return to action Sunday, Nov. 28 when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on the No. 11 North Carolina Tar Heels. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. MST. The game will be broadcast live by the Sun Devils Sports Network on KTKP 1280 AM.
